Livia Carvalho
Dr Livia Carvalho’s research interests have always been in the field of vision science and during her graduate studies and postgraduate training, she has been entirely focused on consolidating her career within academic research. Livia has a MSc in Neuroscience from University College London (UCL, London, UK) and was awarded her PhD in 2009, also from UCL, where she was based at the Institute of Ophthalmology. Livia’s two postdoctoral training positions in the UK and USA, changed the direction of her research within the vision field from basic science to translational research placing her at the forefront of biomedical vision research worldwide. She relocated to Australia in 2015 to start her own lab and her current focus is on creating research platforms in the areas of gene therapy treatments for inherited retinal dystrophies using AAV technologies, alongside understanding the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms behind vision loss, cell death mechanisms, molecular markers of disease and retinal development and migration mechanisms.
