Cameron L McKnight

Originally from Canada, Cameron McKnight did his honours in biomedical science at the University of Waterloo. Interested in stem cells early on, Cameron did an independent study project in his third year looking at the effects of depression on stem cell division in the hippocampus. After graduating, he worked briefly as a research assistant investigating stem cell niche maintenance in the drosophila midgut before moving to Australia to take on a masters by coursework in biomedical science at the University of Melbourne. Cameron’s master’s work focused primarily on using CRISPR/Cas9 to generate a panel of human pluripotent stem cell models of mitochondrial disease. Now in his PhD Cameron is differentiating the stem cell models he previously characterised toward a cardiomyocyte cell fate to investigate the potential of promising therapeutic strategies for mitochondrial diseases in a clinically relevant cell type.
